Late-night and early-morning commuting on Oʻahu

Skyline runs from about 4:00 AM to 10:30 PM, so overnight trips on Oʻahu depend on TheBus, where Routes 2 and 40 keep running through the night, about once an hour after midnight. Route 42 runs until about 1:20 AM and the W Line until about 1:30 AM, and most other routes stop for the night, so it pays to know your last trip.

Early-morning starts

  • Skyline: first trains at about 4:00 AM from both ends, every 10 minutes from then on.
  • CountryExpress C (Mākaha, Kapolei, downtown, Ala Moana): first trips from about 2:50 AM.
  • CountryExpress E (ʻEwa Beach, downtown, Waikīkī): first trip toward town at about 3:45 AM on weekdays.

Skyline's last trains

The last trains that run the full line leave Kualakaʻi (East Kapolei) and Kahauiki (Kalihi Transit Center) at about 10:00 PM. Later trains, up to about 10:30 PM, run only part of the line; for example, the last westbound train from Kahauiki goes only as far as Kalauao (Pearlridge). If you are going to the far end of the line after 10 PM, check your exact train.

Practical tips for night trips

  • Check live arrivals before you walk to the stop. TheBusHEA shows estimated arrivals at any stop, and TheBus information line is (808) 848-5555.
  • Wait at a lit, busy stop or station when you can, and keep your phone charged.
  • Let someone know your plan and when you expect to get home.
  • Know your backup, such as a later overnight route, a rideshare or a ride from someone you know, before the last bus leaves.
  • Sit where you are comfortable, and get off at a busier stop if you would rather walk a little farther on a lit street.
